You could say that I am majoring in band. I am a member of six ensembles at my school that fall under the band department, and I enjoy being in all of them. One of these bands is the marching band, which we were awarded the Sudler Trophy this year.

This is just short and sweet, but I was awarded the Bandsman of the Year award, which goes to the member of the band that exhibits qualities of leadership, pride, and good work ethic within the band, as well as having been a member of the band for … continue reading

Senior Recital

June 13, 2014 at 11:13pm
Fact: I play euphonium.

This past April, I shared a recital with a bassoonist. We both played solo pieces, and then closed with a duet. It was a fun experience, and I really loved performing for people and having the opportunity to share music that I enjoyed with them. This recital also happened to be a requirement for me to graduate, so I guess it's good that I got that out of the way during my sophomore year.

Because I love to play music with other people, I decided that I would have ano… continue reading

Leadership Lesson

April 27, 2014 at 5:43pm
When you're a leader, you need to lead with the group's best interests in mind. Leadership is about serving the group, not using your power to further your own agenda.

This is what I have learned about leadership. I feel like I always talk to whatever group I'm leading and try to find out what change they want to see, instead of doing whatever I want. Even with the new recruitment plan for my fraternity, I talked to the members to get their input, and I tweaked the plan so that it was for the… continue reading

Leadership 2: The Not-So-Happy Sequel

April 6, 2014 at 10:11pm
I'll just go ahead and say this: I have a really bad characteristic, in that I am super passive-aggressive about a lot of things. For instance, tonight, I lost the election for the position of president in the fraternity that I'm in, Kappa Kappa Psi. However, I was elected to the vice-president of membership position, which happens to be the position that the new president had last year.

Because I'm upset about losing the election for president, I've already decided to overhaul our membership… continue reading

People Are Cool

March 4, 2014 at 8:27pm
You know how you can meet someone that you hardly know, and you are able to talk to them without feeling apprehensive about what you say? I love meeting people like that, because those are the people that I have the best conversations with.

I'm not talking about your best friend. I'm talking about the stage before you become friends, where you are still trying to figure out who this person is. Sometimes, you may talk about common interests or views on current events, but that's not what I'm t… continue reading

I am a Brother

October 8, 2013 at 9:26pm
I really love the fraternity that I'm in, which is Kappa Kappa Psi. It isn't a social fraternity, which is what most people think of when they think of fraternities. My fraternity is an honorary fraternity, so it is an honor and a privilege to be a member of it. We often call ourselves a service fraternity, because we serve the bands, but technically, we are an honorary fraternity.

Like I said before, I love it. I get to serve the bands of Kansas State University, and I get to be surrounded b… continue reading
