Across the Generations--Crystal [Update Journal]
Posted April 24, 2014 at 3:05pm
I meant to keep up with this challenge more, I really did. Shortly after finishing my Set Team challenge in Yellow, I had started a Nuzlocke of Crystal, but abandoned that pretty quickly after a battle that left me with only one Pokemon.
So I'm restarting now, with a new challenge: a Monocolor! Which means I can only Pokemon that are a certain color, if you couldn't tell by the name.
Updates are below:
Updates with a
next to the date are the most recent.
1---3/9/14

Starting off with Mal, a Cyndaquil, which means that all of my Pokemon will be yellow. :D Unfortunately, after some researching of available yellow Pokemon and their moves, this means I will never be able to use Fly.
After I got the egg from Mr. Pokemon, I battled and beat my rival for the first time.

2---3/10/14

Made it to Violet City, beat Falkner, got Flash from the Sprout Tower, evolved Mal, and headed down to Azalea Town.
Now here's the fun part of the story. I went into Ilex Forest to search for my next Pokemon, realized that I could've gotten it back before Violet City, then realized that I could only catch it during the day, so I went into Union Cave to look for another Pokemon I could catch, then realized I couldn't catch that one until morning, either!
Also the egg hatched into Togepi, but since it's not yellow, I stuck it in the PC, where it will stay forever.

Once morning finally rolled around, I went to catch some Pokemon.
The first: Simon, a Weedle. Who is really brown, not yellow, but by the time I realized that, he had already evolved into Kakuna, then again into Beedrill. So he's yellow now, anyway.
The second: Jayne, a Sandshrew. Have you figured out the nickname theme yet?
Now to head into Slowpoke Well for some good old-fashioned training.

After beating Team Rocket at Slowpoke Well and beating my rival for the second time, it was time to take on the gym.

Beat Bugsy, taught Cut to Jayne, and made it through the Ilex Forest. Once I got to Goldenrod City, I leveled the team up a bit before challenging Whitney.

Who, oddly enough, wasn't as tough as I was expecting. Having a Ground-type on my team made Miltank's Rollout less of a threat.
Continuing on, I caught my fourth team member, a Sunkern I named Kaylee. :D Unfortunately, I had the opposite problem that I had when trying to catch Simon and Jayne, and now have to wait for night before I can catch my other team members in the area.

While I waited for night to fall, I headed up to Ecruteak, beat my rival for the third time in the Burned Tower, and attempted to hatch the same egg multiple times (more on that later).
But then it was night, so I rushed off to catch my next three Pokemon: Inara the Psyduck, River the Drowzee, and Book the Meowth. And in other news, Jayne evolved.

Time to train them! jk I'm just gonna keep hatching that same egg 30 more times

The egg was an egg that can hatch into one of eight baby Pokemon. Little did I know that the Pokemon I needed to hatch from that egg was probably the rarest one. I even hatched a shiny Igglybuff before I hatched the Pokemon I needed!
In any event, after what felt like 50 tries I did finally get the right Pokemon, just the wrong gender. Can't breed baby Pokemon though, so I have to find ways to get this thing to love me and evolve.
In between looking up ways to do that, I got the Sun Stone from the Bug Catching Contest so I could evolve Kaylee and maybe make her slightly less useless. With that done, I figured we were ready for the fourth gym.

Beat Morty. I taught Surf to Inara, and decided that Mahogany Town was a good direction to go. Despite being horrendously underleveled, I managed to catch the Gyrados and defeat the Rockets there. And while I'm there, why not take on the gym?

I've made a huge mistake. By sheer force of will (and a few Revives), I beat Pryce. It was probably one of the closest gym battles I've had so far. Afterwards I went back through some earlier towns and explored places I could now reach with Surf, and in the process of doing that, River evolved!

Surfed down to Cianwood City, got the Secretpotion, and brought it back to Jasmine in Olivine. Now I could finally battle her.

Beat Jasmine, Surfed back to Cianwood to take on the gym there too.

Beat Chuck. It's so easy when you take on the gyms backwards! :Db
Book evolved, and I beat my rival for the fourth time before heading back to Goldenrod to save the radio (tower). After getting the Clear Bell, I went to catch Suicune.
After two failed attempts to catch it, I decided I could use some Ultra Balls, since I only had a couple that I had picked up in various places. So I trekked through the Ice Cave, got to Blackthorn City, bought a bunch of Ultra Balls, and headed back to try again, only to catch Suicune in the second Great Ball I threw.

All ready for the last Johto gym.

Beat Claire, and headed off to the Pokemon League!
...Except I'm still terribly underleveled. So back into Victory Road I go for training.

So, it's been about a month, during which time I caught Entei and hatched the last two Pokemon for my team: Zoe the Jolteon and Wash the Pichu.
But at last the training is complete, and I'm ready for the Elite Four!

And to be honest, they weren't all that difficult! It helped that I had a bit of a strategy where I'd have River use Hypnosis + Nightmare which took down a lot of Pokemon pretty easily. I also taught Icy Wind to Book, which helped a lot when fighting Lance.
Now, onwards to Kanto!

I'm going to be doing something a little silly here. I want to battle all the Kanto Gyms in reverse order. :D Of course, in order to even get to Viridian City to battle Blue, there were a number of tasks that needed to be done...
I went up to Cerulean City and got the machine part for the Power Plant, which restored power to the Lavender Radio Tower so I could get the PokeGear card, which allowed me to play the PokeFlute radio station to wake the Snorlax so I could go through Diglett Cave. After that, I surfed down to (what was left of) Cinnabar and talked to Blue so he would return to the Gym and let me battle him.

I was severely underleveled, but somehow I managed to win. His Arcanine nearly took out all of my Pokemon, though.
Moving on, I went to fight Blaine.

Beat Blaine. Hopefully the rest of the Gym leaders are just as easy!
