Legend of the Exile: Retrievers Rising

© Sparkleaf 2014-2021
IT IS DONE. After four long years of inspiration, disappointment, decoding my own outlines, sleepless nights, and circular rewrites, Legend of the Exile is COMPLETE.
(Note: I keep citing Dec 2009 as LotE's start date, which is incorrect; that's the date WoV started, but they started as one story.)

This chapter is rather short, but as I see it, concise. For the most part, this serves to tie up a lot of loose ends and to point characters in good directions for my imagination to run wild.

As for the final confrontation: While the Exile is not truly dead, we know that that Sparktail and Thalia will always be there to stop him. More importantly, for Sparktail, who has always been so introverted, to be able overcome Giratina in a contest of words is a far stronger mark of his growth than any sword technique.

As for what happens to Hoenn, it's hard to say. We know Johto will be under Lyther's care, and Kanto under Insyte's. While Sparktail and Thalia are the undisputed co-champions of Hoenn, they are entrusting this region (or at least Ever Grande) to Shock's leadership. Shock's control over Hoenn may not be so absolute... *hinthint*

Will there be more revisions? Of course! It's me, after all. But none that will alter the actual story. I might simplify a paragraph that looks too complicated, or clarify a plot point that leaves a reader confused. I'll fix typoes or grammatical errors when readers notice. But no rewrites will be so major that I need to inform everyone.

There are, of course, side storylines that I feel I didn't adequately address, or perhaps left out entirely. My biggest regret is probably not developing the Volume IV characters enough, outside of Shock, Amber, and Torrid (and possibly Omega). I will address all those through "LotE bonus" stories.

Skip: LotE Part 1
Skip: LotE Part 2
Skip: LotE Part 3
Skip: LotE Part 4
Back: Chapter 50
LotE: Chapter 51

This will sound cliched, but LotE is just the beginning of the full Exile Series. I have so many more stories to share with you, mostly taking place before LotE. But in due time, we shall pick up where we left off, and fulfill the Exile's War trilogy with Crowning Gates. To quote the lovely nurses at the Pokemon Center: We hope to see you again!

I like this chapter. Not for the same reasons as the previous one, this chapter has a special feel to it that I can't quite put my finger on. I can however point out the places that made me feel it.

1: The various little "trinkets". The Lute's flower, Rush's orb, in some ways the bottle Lyther found I really liked the mention of these items throughout the chapter. It gives a small reminder of other characters or moments from the past.

2: Rush. I love that not every single character ended up with an incredible life after the fact. Several others had this fact, but it felt more impactful for him. The former general of sorts living an incredibly simple life, the fact that after such things some of the characters may not like to (or even can't) bask in the glory or spoils is something i don't see used too frequently and love to see used.

3: The second to the last paragraph. I loooove this paragraph. Noting the ones that have been lost, showing the emotion behind it and how the emotions changed, and showing a bit of insight into Sparktail's thoughts of the future. This really shows much into his depths.

An amazing ending to my favorite story to date. I can't wait to see where you take these stories. And I'm touched you added me to the special thanks. :3

This chapter is meant to tie up loose ends, and to reassure the reader that this has all been one story. x3 Lute with Shaymin's flower is probably my favorite of those "trinkets" because

Rush's scene is definitely the one I consider most powerful. I had to take extra care with it since it's pretty much the setup for Crowning Gates (which I won't get to for some time). The reason it's impactful, in my opinion, is that he's always been an extrovert, always thrived on communication. And now he's isolating himself from all that. Though from another perspective, it is-- in a way-- part of the spoils that he can have the lake's shore to himself.

I just realized that I never clarified this, but Lute is also cut out of the spoils; that's why he's not staying at Mount Moon. Because he broke the guild laws, he can't be a part of the Swordwrit anymore. But because Roathaus knows Lute did it for a reason, they are parting on friendly terms.

I wrote the ending paragraphs in that long pause between chapters 47 and 48 :D Because Sparktail repeatedly thinks about the dead and tries to fight for the sake of the dead, throughout the story, it was important that he realize he can fight for the sake of the living.

//shocked to see name on special thanks list o.o;;;;;;;

Anyways, a great finish to a great story! I hafta say I really like how the characters' tales ended, though I was admittedly pretty sad that they decided to not stay together. A great end to a story, but don't end your writing just yet! /o/

Indeed! You really helped to save Sparktail from antiheroism, Insyte from Shakespearianism, and Lyther from strawman templarism. ^v^ It was your answers to that character survey that really helped, you see!

Oh, they have to go their separate ways so that we have one heck of a time trying to find them all in Crowing Gates. ;D But thank you! I'm glad you liked it, and I'm glad it doesn't seem like a cliffhanger now. Next up, we'll be visiting Sparktail's days with Slick!

....I don't know what to say...As always, your mastery of adjectives created a honeyed, literary concotion, that inspired a deep delight throughout the farthest corners of my mind. However, outside of the descriptions, I felt that this chapter was...lacking in some way. I don't know how, but it felt like there was something missing...

...And then I remembered, this isn't the ending! This may be the last chapter, but it is still the gateway to more and more! If this chapter hadn't lacked a thing, I would feel as though it would be wrong to expand on the universe. Your ending leaves me wanting something more, and it is a great feeling to know that you plan on giving me more.
You should be proud, Sparkleaf. This chapter is a crowning glory by my standards.

If you started reading when I first posted, I added one sentence:
"No matter how many times Giratina rose against the world, Sparktail and Thalia would strike the Exile down each time." It's not much, but it gives the chapter a little more substance, hopefully. ^_^;;

Admittedly, most of the expansion is in the opposite direction-- in the direction of events prior to LotE. XD;; Crowning Gates won't be coming for a while. Still, I'm glad this makes you excited for the coming stories!

It doesn't matter what direction your stories are going, my point still stands. >:)
Also, let me say that I was surprised to get an honourable mention! I didn't realise my Insytes into Insyte meant that much to you.
