Another request, this time from Creamsicle^cool, for a Mega Altaria! Honestly, not a huge fan of this design... it's clouds on its head look like some weird hat, haha. All the mega designs seem so... ehh... overdone? Unneeded? bluehahghrrhg

ANYWAY, I at least really enjoy drawing clouds... Fun to shade :'D

mega evolutions look super ridiculous for sure! but i thought you might like drawing the fluff... either way, it came out really cute!

On a serious note, I think it's important to remember that mega evolutions are not permanent transformations, but rather power-up forms that exist solely for the purposes of exerting maximum power. They don't walk around as mega evolutions for everyday life.

it's like... they're not even organic creatures anymore
just these things to be super powered for random fights
it's just... so against everything I liked about Pokemon

They're magical animals. And the transformation is called "evolution", even if it isn't permanent. Is the connection between a Pokemon and its mega evolution really that different from a Pokemon and it's pre-evolved form?

It's not as if the mega evolutions are completely separated from the original Pokemon. Yes, Mega Salamence looks like a bat boomerang thing doodad or whatever everyone keeps saying, but really it just has the wings extend to its tail and is able to tuck in its legs.

The designs are not bad; they're just not aesthetically pleasing. Yes, there's a difference. I may not like how Mega Swampert looks, but it's a perfectly logical upgrade and it fits with well with established Swampert canon. A monstrous appearance is the price for a boost in strength and speed. Mega Swampert doesn't need to look good. That's why regular Swampert still exists. Some meatheads (and I mean someone with 057 at the end of her username) would claim Swampert is already ugly.

I do have a serious reply to this, actually. With the exception of Mewtwo, Mega evolutions serve the function of empowering the ordinary Pokemon. Gen IV and V gave a buttload of upgrades to legendaries. It reflects the idea that Pokemon have untold potential sealed within them and restores a little of that mystical feel to the series.
Legendaries are not the only one with potential or destiny.

Again, just talking about the concepts, not the designs, which we clearly disagree on. No need to counter with "BUT LAGANDARY BETTER SEXY" or whatever
