Would this site benefit from a blocking feature?

This has been a topic of small debate and such in the Route50 Skype group, so!

  • Yes, it'd help users feel safer on the site in the presence of abusers, people raising red flags, etc

  • Yes, it'd help me filter what I see on the site

  • Yes, but for other reasons

  • I don't really have a stance on this

  • No, I wouldn't need it/not enough users need it

  • No, it'd cause unneeded drama

  • No, but for other reasons

I think the benefits of a blocking feature would be greater than the potential detriment of drama. I would certainly like it if people could have the piece of mind of blocking an abuser, as in the example in the poll choices. R50 has always felt like a nice, safe community, but you never really know everything that happens. Maybe bad things have happened between users that the mods didn't even know about, and I'd like it if users had the option to block those who make them feel unsafe.

While I do not think we have too many users that raise red flags, I rather just have that block feature just in case. We've had trolls in the past after all.

I remember a user harassing another for their phone number and where they lived and we did nothing about it (': The girl more than likely left our site cause of her mother.

But I do understand why people think it'll cause unneeded drama. Though, I do think most of our users would see a ban as the last straw. Maybe I have too much faith in you guys. :P

I'll reiterate my stance on a blocking feature.
Because this is such a small site, the staff should be active enough to intervene when someone's causing trouble.

Even so, staff won't always be there. So having a block feature will aid us to keep everyone safe. I feel like its always needed, no matter how small the site.

Just to reiterate my concerns from discord:
There's enough staffers that we should be able to handle things fairly quickly. I mean, this isn't Facebook or Tumblr.
Even for serious reasons, users won't block and report; they'll block instead of reporting. That leaves the staff in the dark about what's going on.
I'm concerned that users will start to block each other for minor things as well.

I understand your concerns, but I think there are definitely situations where a block option would be handy. For instance, a couple of my abusers have accounts on the site, and while they're both inactive, I don't want them to have the option to contact me here - believe me when I say that this is the last community I don't want these people ruining for me. However since they haven't technically broken site rules, I can't report them, nor can I ban them since that's a biased decision. In this case, a block function would be perfect for preventative measures. Perhaps encouraging people to report exactly WHY they're blocking another user would help to prevent petty blocking, and then staff can get involved if the need be as well.
